Turmeric root is a popular spice in Asia, not just for enhancing dishes and beverages, but also for ceremonial purposes. The bride and groom’s skin is painted with a rich orange-yellow pigment created from turmeric root, which is associated with the sacral chakra and fertility in traditional Bengali weddi gs.
Turmeric is a spice made from the rhizome (root) of a plant in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) that is native to India. Curcumin, a component of turmeric, has been investigated extensively for its anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric plants grow to a height of around 1 meter (3.3 feet) and have long, simple leaves with long petioles (leaf stems). The leaves emerge from rhizomes that branch just beneath the soil surface.
